Text for today: 1 Peter 2:2-10 and Ephesians 2:20-22.
The bible describes the church like a temple made of living stones. Each of us is one of those living stones. Jesus is likened to a cornerstone. A cornerstone in biblical times was not simple a decorative feature of a building. The cornerstone was a perfectly cut and placed stone that was then used as a guide for laying the rest of the stones.
Once the cornerstone was set, great care was taken with each successive stone to make sure it lined up properly, or a the walls would be weak. A few misplaced stones, and eventually the whole building might crumble. If we are living stones making up the household of God, similar principles apply. Our lives should line up with Jesus and one another in a way that makes the whole household of God strong.
In today’s sermon, you’ll learn two major purposes of the body of Christ. These are purposes that no other organization or institution on the face of the earth seeks to fulfill. Therefore, understanding and living into these core purposes is essential for every believer to understand. Plus, Rev. Arnold dives into a third characteristic of people who are living in alignment with Jesus.
Together these three characteristic can be a valuable lens for self-examination. The three characteristics we explore in this sermon are:
1) Sharing the mighty acts of God
2) Embodying the Holy Spirit in your daily life
3) Cherishing Jesus as precious
