The sermons text: Select verses from Hebrews, chapters 11 and 12.

Who are your heroes? Why are they important to you?

The author of the letter to the Hebrews in the New Testament didn’t use the word hero, but he listed many people who we might regard as heroes of faith.

Heroes of faith are people who exercise uncommon courage in trusting God. Heroes both on the pages of scripture and beyond are important to have in our lives. Heroes benefit us in at least three ways:

  1. Heroes instruct us. They model what is right to do often times under difficult circumstances. Their example can give us a pattern to strive to follow.
  2. Heroes inspire us. They live exemplary lives and in so doing we are challenged to expect more from ourselves.
  3. Heroes give us hope. Unlike super heroes in the movies who have super powers, real life heroes are people just like you and me. Consequently, they demonstrate that what seems impossible to us, is actually attainable.

So, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that the Bible contains heroes of faith from whom we can learn.

In this sermon, I also share with you an illustration from the movie We are Marshall that reveals how the verses addressed in this sermon are a call for us to step forward as heroes.

These verses also reminds as that we aren’t alone as we strive to run our race of faith well. There is a great cloud of witnesses who watch on.

Our turn to run…

My home pastor when I was ordained shared with me that our race of faith is much like a relay race. At one time in the past, faithful disciples carried the baton of the Gospel. For a period in our lives we hold that baton with others and run together. But, a day comes when we realize the responsibility to carry the Gospel forward is on us.

Definitely listen to this sermon if you are feeling a bit weary in the faith.
